The Gippsland Circular Economy Hub reached a significant landmark on March 12, hosting its first fully in-person meeting at the Tinamba Hotel to coordinate regional action on sustainability and innovation.
Delivered by Food & Fibre Gippsland (F&FG) in partnership with Sustainability Victoria (SV), the event gathered industry leaders, researchers, and government representatives to strengthen a network dedicated to accelerating circular economy initiatives across the region. The gathering served as a vital face-to-face connection for partners who have previously engaged primarily through the Hub’s digital collaborative platform.
The summit featured a diverse range of presentations from FoodBank Victoria, RDV Gippsland, Food & Fibre Gippsland, and C4 Impact. Discussions focused on current projects and upcoming industry development opportunities, including the potential for cross-regional collaboration with areas such as Bega to align shared sustainability priorities.
The event also highlighted the intersection of local food systems and circular principles, with a lunch featuring Gippsland produce serving as a practical backdrop for the day’s discussions. Updates were provided by regional Shire Councils and the Gippsland Ag Group, further outlining the local roadmap for bioeconomy and circular activities.
A significant portion of the meeting addressed the future of the Hub following the announced shutdown of Sustainability Victoria. F&FG acknowledged the leadership of SV’s Chris Francis and Luke Wilkinson, whose work established the foundations for the Hub’s current regional impact.
Food & Fibre Gippsland has confirmed its commitment to securing the ongoing governance and strategic direction of the Hub. Moving forward, the organisation will focus on:
– Digital expansion: Strengthening the Hub’s online presence to provide updated information on regional bioeconomy initiatives.
– Data-driven strategy: Implementing new data collection and surveys to better map and reflect regional activity and priorities.
– Ongoing connection: Maintaining the momentum of the network through regular engagement and shared resources.
The hub plans to continue its work with a hybrid-format meeting scheduled for late April, with a final date to be confirmed shortly.
