Orbost Snowy Rover have bounced back after a poor showing in round one to overpower arch rival, Lakes Entrance in the second half of their East Gippsland Football Netball League clash at Lakeside Oval last Saturday.
After an honourable loss to reigning premier, Wy Yung in round one, the the Seagulls went in as favourites after the Blues went down to a new look Lucknow at home in round one, a rare loss at their home venue in their last dozen games.
Even against the breeze in the first term, the Seagulls were able to head to the first break with a five-point advantage, which was satisfying for coach Darren Martin and his coaching panel.
With the breeze in the second term, the home side added three goals to one to establish a 16-point half time advantage.
The Blues impressed in the second term, however bad kicking denied them the opportunity to be closer at the main break.
What happened in the second half certainly surprised many spectators at the game and the Lakes Entrance hierarchy, as the Blues kicked eight goals to one in the second half, overwhelming their opponents with their bigger bodies around the contest and their desire for the football.
Orbost kept the home side scoreless in the premiership quarter as the breeze reached its strongest point for the day, their three-goal performance enough to see them a goal in front at the final change.
Going home with the breeze and a parochial home crowd supporting loudly, the advantage was still with the Seagulls, but momentum wasn’t, the Blues kicking five goals to one to win easily in the finish by 29 points.
Jamieson Humphreys kicked three goals for the Blues, whose best were key defender Curtley Nettleton, Humphreys, Gus Rogers, Angus Davis, and new recruits, Matthew Holmes and Brian Leslie.
Tom Hudson kicked three goals for the Seagulls and Mitch Banner two.
Angus Stevens was a standout for Lakes Entrance, battling manfully all day in the ruck, covering the loss of Wykes (work) and Beha (injury).
Angus McKenzie impressed all day playing a role on ex Seagull coach, Tommy Smith (two goals).
Hudson is getting his touch back after a long absence on the sidelines, and a big day in front of the sticks looks just around the corner.
Banner, Liam Carroll and Will Cantrill were also named in the best.
Orbost will enjoy a break this week with a bye, before welcoming Paynesville to Lochiel Park on May 2.
