Orbost Snowy Rovers’ “A” grade side have broken through for their first win of the season in East Gippsland netball, hanging on to beat a gallant Lakes Entrance in round two action at the Lakeside Oval.
The match was a terrific encounter, with the Blues hanging on to win by three goals, withholding a spirited challenge from the Seagulls in the second half.
Orbost got the jump early in the match, but Lakes found their rhythm and narrowed the lead to just two goals at quarter time.
The second term was pivotal in the final result with Blues tight and ruthless defence seeing them get out to a seven-goal lead
at half time.
Lakes played some exciting netball towards the end of the third but the margin was still seven at the final break.
But not to be denied, the Seagulls rallied hard in the final term, reducing the lead to just three at the final siren.
Hayley Boxall and Chelsea Di Cecco were both standouts for the Blues.
The Seagulls were winners in “B” grade, where they established a break over Orbost in the second quarter and maintained it through to the finish, winning 30-24.
Orbost managed to close to gap in the third term to just two goals, but the Seagulls had all the answers down the stretch, scoring an impressive win.
Makayla Edlington and Meg Herbert were solid contributors for the Blues.
The most exciting match of the day was in “C” grade, with Orbost winning a cracking match by just a goal.
Lakes made the running early and led at half time, but it was the Blues who dominated the last term, gaining victory of the back of accurate shooting, the result of Lakes Entrance’s unforced errors.
Narelle Macalister and Keeley Greaves were influential in the last term for
the Blues.
The sides were relatively well matched in “D” grade, but the points went the way of Orbost, 22-13.
Lakes were certainly in the match, but made a few too many mistakes and turnovers that were the difference
between victory and defeat in low-
scoring encounter.
Sue Kendrick and Helen Nixon led the way with plenty of experience at crucial times in the match.
The Blues were too good in the under 17s, winning effortlessly 41-17, with Edlington, Lara Seal and Remmi MacDonell leading the way.
It was another comfortable win for Orbost in the under 15s, taking the contest 31-10.
Lara Burn and Leila Barnes were standouts for the Blues.
The Seagulls had their second win of the day in the under 13s, playing an exciting brand of netball, winning 33-14.
