The local business landscape is showing strong signs of resilience and growth, with a wave of new enterprises and key community initiatives taking centre stage at the latest Orbost and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ODCCI) meeting.
Held on Tuesday, April 14, the committee meeting celebrated a recent surge in local entrepreneurship.
Over the past few months, the town has welcomed several new businesses, including Snowy River Smash Repairs, Ella Bache, Hair Studio 126, Karinas Kuts, John John’s Diner, and Bloom.
This positive economic trend has been further bolstered by the recent employment of four new trade apprentices within the community.
Beyond business growth, the chamber reviewed ongoing discussions regarding essential local services and infrastructure.
Following a recent meeting with the East Gippsland Shire Council, the ODCCI highlighted the need for a local manager at the Orbost pool, as well as an improved booking system for swimming lessons.
Noting the strong attendance at recent water aerobics sessions, the chamber is also advocating for the installation of a new entry step to better assist elderly patrons.
Strategic community planning continues to move forward through the “Orbost Together” initiative.
Work is currently underway to develop a comprehensive community calendar of events and to establish a dedicated volunteer pool to support local festivities.
On the tourism front, the Visitor Information Centre (VIC) at the Slab Hut reported a highly successful Easter stall over the recent holiday period.
Looking ahead to the end of the year, the Chamber’s Christmas Eve Sub-Committee is already laying the groundwork for the 2026 celebrations.
Popular activities such as “Minute to Win It,” jumping castles, and laser tag have been confirmed for the community festivities.
To support the annual Christmas event, the chamber is exploring new fundraising avenues, including wood raffles and the sale of show bags.
