Farmers from across the region will have the chance to explore the latest in irrigation technology and water management when the Gippsland Irrigation Expo returns to Sale next month.
The free event, hosted by Agriculture Victoria, will be held at the Sale Showgrounds on Wednesday, May 20, featuring more than 40 exhibitors, a technical program and practical demonstrations.
With many producers preparing for drier conditions and tighter water allocations, the expo aims to help farmers improve water efficiency, upgrade ageing systems and make informed operational decisions.
Agriculture Victoria irrigation extension officer Stephanie Veskoukis said the event had been shaped by farmer feedback.
“Farmers told us they wanted an event that adds value beyond sales,” she said.
“They want to learn, upskill and exchange practical knowledge, as well as discuss the latest irrigation products and services.”
The 2026 program will be headlined by Dr James Hills, who specialises in irrigation scheduling, soil moisture monitoring and dairy system performance.
Dr Hills said increasing climate variability and water reliability would be key challenges in the coming decade, and will present practical strategies for improving irrigation efficiency using soil moisture and weather data.
Other sessions will cover energy-efficient system design and the impact of end-gun performance on crop productivity.
The event will conclude with an expert panel Q&A, allowing attendees to seek tailored advice.
Running from 9am to 4pm, the expo is funded through the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action’s Sustainable Irrigation Program and delivered in partnership with the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority.
