East Gippslanders are being urged to lace up, dress in pink and join the crowd for this year’s Mother’s Day Classic on Sunday, May 10, as the iconic fundraiser returns for its 29th year.
The Bairnsdale event at Howitt Park promises a vibrant, community-driven morning, with participants able to walk or run 5km or 10km along the scenic Mitchell River — all while raising vital funds for breast and ovarian cancer research.
What began in 1998 with just 3000 participants in Melbourne and Sydney has grown into one of Australia’s most powerful community events, now drawing up to 100,000 people across more than 90 locations nationwide. More than 1.8 million Australians have taken part, helping raise over $50 million for life-saving research.
Chief executive officer Zara Lawless said the event’s continued growth, particularly in regional areas, highlights its deep community impact.
“We’re thrilled to see so many communities taking the lead and hosting their own events,” she said.
“Australians are turning Mother’s Day into something truly meaningful — a chance to honour loved ones and stand together in support.”
The impact of that support is clear. Since the event began, the five-year survival rate for breast cancer has risen from 84 per cent to 93 per cent, thanks largely to advances in research. But the fight is far from over, with 61 Australians diagnosed with breast or ovarian cancer every day, and 12 lives lost.
In Bairnsdale, the day will kick off with registrations at 8.30am, followed by the 10km run at 9am and the 5km run and walk shortly after. The mostly flat riverside course is designed to be inclusive, welcoming participants of all ages and abilities — from serious runners to families with prams.
A relaxed, festival-like atmosphere is expected, with coffee on hand, facilities available and even four-legged friends welcome on leads.
Organisers are encouraging locals to get involved, rally friends
and family, and be part of an event that blends fitness, community and purpose.
Registrations are now open via the Mother’s Day Classic website.
