The Gippsland Symphony Orchestra (GSO) is set to bring the warmth and expressive power of the Romantic era to regional stages this May, with two highly anticipated performances in Warragul and Sale.
Under the baton of David Williams OAM, the orchestra will present “Romantic Brilliance,” a program designed to showcase the immense color and emotional range of the 19th-century repertoire.
The concert series will feature Steve Reeves as soloist for Serge Koussevitsky’s Double Bass Concerto. A rare treat for local audiences, the work transforms the orchestra’s deepest voice into a singing, virtuosic lead instrument.
The program opens with the graceful charm of Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel’s Overture in C, followed by the serene lyricism of Dvořák’s Nocturne in B major. The afternoon culminates in Dvořák’s Symphony No. 8, a life-affirming masterpiece celebrated for its vibrant folk-inspired rhythms and joyous harmonies.
Conductor David Williams OAM, a distinguished figure in Victorian music education and performing arts, brings a wealth of experience to the podium. His career spans over 80 musical theater productions and extensive work with the MSO and State Orchestra of Victoria.
Audiences can catch this premier symphonic event at the West Gippsland Arts Centre in Warragul on Sunday, May 3 at 2pm, followed by a second performance at The Wedge Performing Arts Centre in Sale on Sunday, May 17 at 2pm.
Founded in 2015, the GSO continues to provide a platform for high-quality regional musicianship, ensuring local audiences have access to world-class repertoire without the need for city travel.
