Families with children interested in music, theatre or performance are being encouraged to attend one or both of Gippsland Grammar’s two upcoming musicals to experience firsthand the School’s Performing Arts program in action.
More than 70 students from years seven to 12 will perform Seussical at the Garnsey Campus from May 7-9, while every student at the school’s junior St Anne’s campus will appear on The Wedge stage on June 11 and 12 to perform Frozen Jr.
As well as being two fantastic family-friendly theatre opportunities for all Gippsland families, the two productions also offer a glimpse into the rich Performing Arts opportunities available to all students at Gippsland Grammar, from ELC to VCE.
Gippsland Grammar Director of Music Dr Kevin Cameron said the school’s comprehensive Performing Arts program encourages students to explore their creativity while developing skills in collaboration, discipline and communication.
“The (annual musicals are) one of the most important events on the Gippsland Grammar calendar,” Dr Cameron said.
“Students and staff work together to make a story come to life through music, movement and vivid characters.
“Regardless of if a student is on the stage, in the tech box, behind the scenes, making costumes and props, or in the orchestra, there is opportunity for everyone to contribute to making something magical that is so much greater than the sum of the individual parts.
“We invite all members of our School and wider community will come along to these performances to see what Gippsland Grammar offers in the Performing Arts.”
Large-scale musical productions are a highlight of the School’s Performing Arts calendar and are held annually at the senior Garnsey Campus and biennially in opposite years at each of the school’s two junior campuses.
Each production involves students in a wide range of roles both on stage and behind the scenes, including lighting, sound, stage management and set design.
Highlight productions from recent years at Garnsey have included Newsies, 42nd Street, Catch Me If You Can, Annie, Chicago and Legally Blonde, while junior campus productions have included Moana, Finding Nemo and Peter Pan.
All Gippsland Grammar students are introduced to music and performance from an early age through specialist music classes and ensemble opportunities at the school’s junior campuses, before expanding into concerts, bands, choirs and theatre productions during the secondary years.
Seussical and Frozen Jr. both highlight the breadth of performing arts opportunities available to students across Gippsland Grammar’s three campuses.
Families from across the region are welcome to attend the performances as a way to experience the school’s vibrant performing arts culture and see firsthand the creativity, confidence and collaboration that students develop through these programs.
Seussical will be performed at Gippsland Grammar’s Garnsey Campus Hall, McGhee St, Sale from Thursday, May 7 to Saturday, May 9.
