The men’s handicapped singles final was held last Thursday morning, in idyllic conditions at the Orbost Bowling Club.
The match turned into a three-hour, 37 end marathon, a tussle between two prize fighters, Bruce Kneebone and Jurgen Fichtner.
Kneebone started on a 15 handicap, drawing close to Fichtner, who did not have a handicap in the last few ends of the game.
On the 36th end, the score was tied on 20 each, but with Jurgen bowling a score of 3 on the last end, he took out the game with a score of 23-20.
The last club championship for 2025/26 season, the mixed pairs, was held last Saturday.
They were played in perfect weather and with a large complement of members on the green.
Played in sectional format with three games of 10 ends, the overall winners were Ron and Gwen Hatcher, taking out the title for the third year in a row.
The runners up were Ralph Harding and Jenny Gurney.
A presentation of prizes and certificates for all the 2025/26 Champions will be held in conjunction with the Annual General Meeting on Sunday, May 10.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Thursday’s social bowls started slightly later than usual due to the final of the men’s handicapped singles in the morning.
There was a good attendance of bowlers, who ended up playing two games, one of 10 ends with the second cut to eight due to the lateness of the afternoon.
The only two game winners for the afternoon, were Scott Farnell’s team of Steve Shorten, Rob Black and Annette Grmusa.
There was a pleasing number of bowlers in attendance on Sunday for the monthly Scroungers competition considering the majority of them had played in the championship mixed pairs the day before.
The two games of 12 ends were played in very sunny, almost hot conditions with no breeze to speak of.
The highest point scores for the day were Vanessa Frank (69), Trevor Perry (61) and Maurice Frank (60).
After four rounds of the competition, Maurice Frank is on top of the leaderboard with a combined total of 186, followed by Fichtner (168) and Trevor Hawkey (143).
However, with a further three rounds to go before the end of the current competition, there’s plenty of time for the lead to change.
The next social bowls will be on Thursday, April 30, with bowlers asked to be at the club no later than 12.30pm.
