The Orbost Arts Centre has extended a thank you to the local community following an outpouring of support during the East Gippsland Shire Council’s Draft Budget 2026–2027 consultation process.
Dozens of residents and supporters submitted formal letters to council, advocating for the continued funding of part-time administration and coordination roles.
These positions are considered critical to the centre’s survival, providing the structural support necessary for the volunteer-led organisation to keep its doors open.
Managed by a dedicated team of volunteers and local artists, the Orbost Arts Centre facilitates a vast array of regional activities.
It is the permanent home of the long-running Australian Wood Design Exhibition and serves as a venue for rotating art exhibitions, workshops, music sessions and children’s arts programs.
Beyond its artistic offerings, the facility acts as a multi-purpose community space, hosting films, live performances, tour groups and local meetings.
It also provides an important economic outlet for regional creators, showcasing and selling locally made artworks to the thousands of visitors who pass through Orbost each year.
Supporters of the funding request argue that the centre is a key driver for regional tourism and social connection.
They contend that the small investment in administrative roles pays significant dividends by empowering volunteers to maintain a professional and welcoming destination for both locals and travellers.
As the East Gippsland Shire Council moves toward finalising its 2026–2027 budget, the Orbost Arts Centre remains hopeful that the community’s advocacy will ensure the facility remains a vibrant part of the region’s future.
