The SES Orbost Unit is inviting the local community to go behind the scenes and discover the vital role of emergency volunteers as part of the upcoming Wear Orange Wednesday celebrations.
On Wednesday, May 20, the unit will open the doors of its Orbost base to the public, hosting an evening of food, fun, and information starting at 5.30pm.
The event serves as both a thank you to the community and a recruitment drive as the unit looks to bolster its ranks in the face of increasingly frequent weather events.
Attendees will be treated to a free community barbecue and a guided tour of the Orbost base, offering a rare opportunity to see where the rescue happens and get an up-close look at the specialised equipment used during emergencies.
The evening will also feature a local knowledge quiz with prizes up for grabs, providing a light-hearted way for residents to test their knowledge of the region they help protect.
Beyond the festivities, the event carries an important message – the SES is actively seeking new members to join the Orbost Unit family.
There is a place for everyone within the unit, with a wide variety of roles currently available.
Whether individuals are interested in frontline rescue or essential support positions, the SES provides full training and ongoing support for all volunteers.
The event is a chance for those curious about volunteering to speak directly with current members and learn about the full support provided to those who step up to serve.
Residents are encouraged to wear orange on the day to show their support for the men and women who work year-round to keep the community safe.
