Bookworms, craft enthusiasts, and bargain hunters from across East Gippsland are tracking down their reading lists as a major community partnership prepares to take over the lakeside township this weekend.
The Friends of Paynesville Library have joined forces with the Country Women’s Association (CWA) of Victoria’s Paynesville Toonalook Branch for a massive, multi-faceted King’s Birthday Long Weekend Book Sale and fundraiser.
The popular annual event will take over the Paynesville Community Hall for three full days, running from Saturday, June 6 through to Monday, June 8.
Organisers are promising a “Right Royal” browsing experience this year, with more than 10,000 high-quality books meticulously sorted and ready for the tables. The staggering literary inventory is a testament to the immense generosity of the East Gippsland community, who have donated thousands of items to help top up the library group’s extensive selection.
Adding an extra element of excitement to the rows of fiction, non-fiction, biographies, and children’s literature, organisers have hidden three special cash vouchers within the pages of the thousands of books on display, waiting to be discovered by lucky, eagle-eyed buyers.
To make the opening Saturday even sweeter, the Paynesville Toonalook CWA ladies will be on-site from 10:00 am hosting a dedicated Biscuit, Slice, and Scone Stall. Eager attendees are being urged to get in quick before the branch’s famous home-baked treats inevitably sell out.
The culinary stall serves a vital local purpose, with all monies raised by the CWA over the weekend going directly toward assisting vulnerable women, children, and families within the region.
In addition to the baking, the CWA will also host a vibrant visual display showcasing local creative talent. Visitors can marvel at a selection of the branch’s winning entries from this year’s CWA North Gippsland Creative Arts Exhibition, alongside a diverse array of other bespoke, heritage crafts handmade by active members.
Whether you are looking to discover a modern page-turner, pick up a stunning piece of local craft, or simply enjoy a fresh scone for a good cause, community members are encouraged to drop in and enjoy the hustle and bustle.
The hall doors will open at 10am and close at 3pm daily across all three days, with entry to the public free of charge.
