Community members, tradies, farmers, and business owners will brave the icy waters this weekend when the Marlo Hotel hosts its inaugural Big Freeze challenge to raise vital funds for Motor Neurone Disease (MND) research.
Scheduled for this Saturday, June 6, the event has drawn around 30 local participants from all walks of life who have volunteered to take the plunge down the freeze slide in support of the cause.
Organised with just a week’s preparation, the hotel team aims to establish the fundraiser as an annual tradition for the coastal town.
The icy festivities will officially kick off at 3pm, with sliders encouraged to showcase their local pride by plunging in their work gear, uniforms, or trade outfits.
Ahead of the slide, local resident Tahlia Easton will address the crowd to share her family’s personal experience with the condition, sliding in loving memory of her grandmother, Jewel Young.
All proceeds from the weekend’s initiatives – including Friday night raffles, bucket donations and official Big Freeze beanie sales at the bar – will go directly toward supporting those impacted by MND.
Adult beanies are available for $25, with kids’ sizes priced at $20.
The community fundraising will extend into the evening, featuring live music from local act Rendezvous and a charity auction at 7.45pm.
A dedicated changing and shower space will be made available for all participants post-slide.
Organisers have reminded sliders to bring their own towels and to submit any outstanding business logos or promotional photos ahead of Saturday’s event.
