The coastal township of Marlo has officially been named a finalist in the 2026 Victorian Top Tourism Town Awards, putting the hidden gem of the Far East in the running for the state’s prestigious Top Tiny Tourism Town crown.

East Gippsland Shire Council announced the news last week, celebrating Marlo’s inclusion among some of Victoria’s most iconic regional destinations.

Managed by the Victorian Tourism Industry Council (VTIC), the awards recognise towns that deliver outstanding visitor experiences through a unified community effort.

Known for the dramatic meeting of the Snowy River and the Southern Ocean, Marlo has long held a reputation as a premier destination for fishing, boating and nature lovers.

President of the Marlo Ratepayers and Residents Association, Shayne Boyd, said the selection was a testament to the town’s unique character and collaborative spirit.

“It is wonderful that Marlo has been selected as a finalist,” Ms Boyd said.

“The application was a combined effort with contributions by many and was well supported by East Gippsland Shire staff. Our entry highlights Marlo’s natural environment – land, sea and sky – and our lovely local community.”

Marlo has been named a finalist in the 2026 Victorian Top Tourism Town Awards. Managed by the Victorian Tourism Industry Council, the awards recognise towns that deliver outstanding visitor experiences.

Ms Boyd noted that the bid was designed to showcase the diverse landscapes that make the region unique, including the estuary, coast, rainforest and coastal heathlands.

“We love sharing and preserving what is so special about Marlo. The goal is to highlight what we love and hopefully attract visitors who value what we have here,” she said.

The award is decided in part by public voting, and a massive local campaign is already underway.

Other towns nominated include Avoca, Dunkeld, Glenrowan, Ouyen, Port Campbell, Portsea and Whitfield.

Local institutions including the Marlo Hotel, Sailors Grave Brewing, Marlo Primary School, and various caravan parks and cafes are urging patrons and residents to get behind the bid.

Public voting is now open and will remain live until 5pm on Friday, June 26.

Community members and fans of the town can cast their ballots via the official VTIC website.
