Is your skin barrier causing your breakouts?

Many people think acne is simply caused by oily skin, but a damaged skin barrier may be playing a much bigger role.

Your skin barrier is the outer protective layer of your skin. It helps retain moisture, keeps irritants and bacteria out, and supports healthy skin function.

When this barrier becomes compromised, it can contribute to ongoing acne and skin sensitivity.

A weakened skin barrier often leads to increased oil production as the skin tries to compensate for moisture loss. This excess oil can clog pores and contribute to congestion and breakouts.

The skin also becomes more vulnerable to irritation and bacteria, triggering inflammation.

Acne lesions may appear redder, more inflamed and take longer to heal.

When the barrier is impaired, pollutants, allergens and microbes can penetrate the skin more easily, disrupting its natural balance and increasing the likelihood of new breakouts.

While the skin barrier plays an important role in acne development, it is only one piece of the puzzle. Other contributing factors may include hormonal fluctuations, genetics, skincare products, cosmetics and makeup, certain medications, stress levels, lifestyle habits and dietary choices.

Understanding these factors can help create a more effective and personalised treatment plan.

The good news is that professional skin treatments and appropriate homecare products can help restore the skin barrier, reduce inflammation, and support clearer, healthier skin over time.

Every skin is different. At MediSkin, the team assesses the underlying causes of your acne and create a tailored treatment plan to help you achieve healthier, clearer skin.
