The Wilderness Coast Artists (WCA) have enjoyed a productive winter season at their studio space in the former Rainforest Centre in Orbost, expanding their class schedule and progressing with collaborative projects.
The group has named longtime member Heather Ostler as its artist of the month for July.
Drawing inspiration from the birds, animals and landscapes of East Gippsland and her travels, Ms Ostler’s work utilises a refined palette of pastel pencils and watercolours.
As the oldest of six children, Ms Ostler enjoyed drawing and painting from a young age.
However, her artistic pursuits were put on hold early in life when her mother passed away, requiring her to help raise her younger siblings and manage the demands of farm life.
It was not until later in life, following retirement and extensive travel across Australia with her husband, that she was able to formally return to her passion.
She developed her skills under the guidance of well-known art tutor Jan Long.
Today, Ms Ostler is a key contributor to WCA initiatives, including the group’s collective projects.
Known for her generosity, she frequently shares hand-painted artworks as gifts for family and friends.
A selection of her drawings and paintings is currently on display at the WCA studio space.
Despite the cold winter weather, the studio’s Tuesday Open Studio days remain popular with members.
Participants use the weekly sessions to work on individual projects, exchange technical knowledge and discuss local art opportunities.
To keep the workspace comfortable during winter, members gather around the studio’s wood heater, with attendees encouraged to contribute a log or kindling.
The group’s educational offerings also continue to grow:
– Mondays: Alternating fortnightly drawing classes and watercolour sessions.
– Coming soon: The introduction of monthly portrait painting sessions in the studio.
Additionally, the group’s collaborative project, The Water Dragon, is nearing completion.
With the framing process almost finished, members are preparing for a formal public reveal of the artwork in the near future.
The Wilderness Coast Artists community was deeply saddened by the recent untimely passing of newer member Yasmin Sadler.
Remembered as a talented poet and photographer, Ms Sadler had recently joined the studio with a keen interest in developing her oil painting skills.
Her presence, creativity, and warmth will be greatly missed by her family, friends and fellow artists.
