A group of tourism operators, government officials and community members recently gathered on the Errinundra Plateau for a collaborative field day aimed at exploring the region’s ecotourism potential.

The exploratory day brought together key stakeholders, including representatives from Snowy River Cycling, the Orbost Visitor Information Centre, Parks Victoria, East Gippsland Shire Council (EGSC), the Emerald Link conservation initiative, local community members and Member for Eastern Victoria, Tom McIntosh.

The focus of the tour was to highlight the nature-based tourism opportunities the high-altitude plateau offers and to emphasise the value of joint cooperation between local businesses, land managers and government bodies to support regional East Gippsland.

Michelle Webb, of Orbost-based tour operator Snowy River Cycling, noted the trip was an eye-opener for many local participants.

“It’s a special area and most of us from Orbost hadn’t been before,” Ms Webb said.

“It was good to be having conversations – Parks, people, businesses, all working towards something together.”

Ms Webb expressed gratitude to those who participated, noting that building strong local networks is vital for the long-term economic transition of the district.

“A huge thank you to everyone who gave their time and passion to the day. Every conversation, every connection and every collaboration helps strengthen the future of our region” Ms Webb said.

As East Gippsland continues to diversify its economy, operators like Snowy River Cycling are positioning themselves to lead nature-based tourism efforts in the high country.

“At Snowy River Cycling, we’re proud to play a role in growing East Gippsland’s visitor economy,” Ms Webb said.

“We know it’s never just about bikes – it’s about showcasing our landscapes, supporting local businesses, creating memorable visitor experiences and ensuring our regional communities thrive.”

The group also stopped by the Bendoc Commercial Hotel. (PS)
