Two outstanding junior wins highlighted a tough and competitive day of action for the Orbost Snowy Rovers netballers in round 12 of East Gippsland netball at Boyd Reserve in Stratford last Saturday.
The under 17 girls leapfrogged their opponent on the ladder into the top four, with a hard-fought and ultra impressive six-goal win against a quality opponent, 43-37.
Remi MacDonnell, Lara Seal and Lani Mundy, backing up from the under 15s all played pivotal roles in what could be a season defining victory.
The girls have played some outstanding netball at times, but this certainly ranks as their best performance and a great confidence builder with the finals not faraway.
The under 15s reaffirmed their place in the top two with a well executed and monumental victory over Stratford who are third on the ladder.
The Blues, led by Jemima Seal and Hayley Russell up from the under 13s, were emphatic winners, 32-18.
Stratford is looming as the side to beat in “A” grade and they were much too good for the Blues, victorious in grand style, 75-29.
It wasn’t all doom and gloom for the visitors, with youngster Jess Griebenow joining established star, Hayley Boxall in the better players.
The Swans prevailed again comfortably in “B” grade, 47- 23, with Orbost having some attractive patches, but lacked the composure and steadiness of the home side.
Griebenow was again prominent, Kirsty Herbert and Claudia Johnson in a team that never shirked the issue or shied away from the challenge.
Stratford was a mile too good in “C” grade, winning 45-11.
Emma Chapman and Chloe Shanahan led the rearguard for the Blues.
It was a similar scenario in “D” grade, with Stratford out of blocks quickly on the way to an easy 37-16 victory, Sue Kendrick again among the better contributors for the Blues.
The best game of the day was in the under 13s where the Orbost youngsters played out of their skin, chasing their second win of the season against an Orbost outfit that has racked up nine victories.
The visitors throwing down a serious challenge to the Swans, going down in a terrific encounter, 28-23.
Regular solid contributors, London Austin and Ruby Faithfull led from the front.
The Blues will take on Lindenow this week at the Lindenow Recreation Reserve.
