Police station open for business

by Snowy River Mail

in Local News

Mallacoota now has a brand new police station, with the doors of the new facility opened for business last Wednesday, November 28.

The new station at 38 Maurice Avenue replaces the old police station on Lees Road, which served the local community for nearly four decades since 1980 and continued to do so over the past 12 months as the new station was built.

Sergeant Stuart Johnston said the new station is a vast improvement on the old building and its location provides a far more visible presence in the town.

“The old police station has served local police and the community well, but it’s now tired and we’ve outgrown it,” he said.

“The new, modern building has updated facilities to support local police officers in their duties and has a much more community-friendly entrance.”

He said the new station also has a minimum carbon footprint in accordance with the architect-designed plans.

Local tradesmen and suppliers have been used wherever possible in the build of the new station, with local artwork to be installed in the near future.

Tim Hall and Associates from Bairnsdale were architects/designers and construction was by CM&HM Banks, Bairnsdale.

An outside area has been turned into a comfortable seating arrangement with table and benches from Silvertop Woodwork, Cann River. The Maurice Avenue facility is in line with current police protocol, with greater security for both police officers and the general public, with a private consultation area for members of the public.

Its location in the centre of town also provides better access for the many tourists who visit during peak holiday periods.

Mallacoota police cover the areas of Mallacoota, Cann River and Bendoc. The station’s phone number remains the same. In an emergency always call Triple Zero (000).

With the new facility now open for business, it will be officially opened at a later date.
