With a period of 16 years between editions, the much-awaited fourth edition of Stepping Stones was launched at Mallacoota’s Art Space last Friday.
Stepping Stones was one of the early guides of the area of Mallacoota and the Wilderness Coast, with photos and maps describing local flora and fauna, walking tracks and points of interest for visitors.
Chris Smyth, a previous resident and one of the original conveners of the Friends of Mallacoota, was invited to announce the release of the new Stepping Stones.
Chris spoke of his early days as a teacher in Mallacoota and the collaboration of the Friends of Mallacoota and community members on the printing of the first issue in 1983.
Well-known for his environmental campaigning, Chris previously worked with the Australian Conservation Foundation, Victorian National Parks Association and the Gould League.
An advisor and proofreader on the current issue, Chris spoke to the large appreciative crowd about the natural values of Mallacoota and the on-going aim of the Friends of Mallacoota to protect and sustain the character of Mallacoota and its surrounds.
He acknowledged the efforts of the current members of the Friends of Mallacoota, some of whom were involved in publishing the first edition of Stepping Stones.
