Australia Day celebrations

by Snowy River Mail
16 January 2024
in Local News

On January 26 each year, people from all walks of life, faith and backgrounds gather with friends and families in their communities and reflect on what it means to be Australian.
There has never been one way, nor one place to celebrate Australia Day.
In streets, towns and suburbs the day is celebrated differently, at beaches, parks and backyards or at a local event held by local councils.
Australia Day is a day to reflect on out history, respect the stories and contributions others have made to our nation and celebrate our place in the world, from the world’s oldest living continuous culture and their love and care of Country, to a confident young nation with freedoms others aspire to.
The Orbost Rotary Club is once again hosting Australia Day celebrations in Forest Park beginning at 7.30am, where a free breakfast will be provided, followed by games for the kids, 9am will see the commencement of the Australian flag raising ceremony followed by the awards for the local Citizen of the Year, followed by Young Citizen of the Year and then the Local Event of the Year.
This will be followed by the sharing of a massive lamington cake, which has again been donated by the Orbost Bakery.
Breakfast, tea and coffee are all provided for free.

This year’s celebration will once again be held at Forest Park, while East Gippsland Shire Council’s Australia Day Awards ceremony will be held at the Eagle Point Foreshore Hub.
