Monday, January 29, marked another important date in the long life of Orbost’s historic Snowy Rail Bridge.
This was the date when contractors McInness Earthmoving arrived onsite at Burn Road to begin the construction of carparks associated with the restoration project.
“With the turning of the first sod, our long-awaited project to restore the 770 metre long Snowy Rail Bridge for use in our recreational, cultural and tourist industries has begun,” president of the Save the Snowy Rail Bridge Association, Liz Mitchell, said.
“Carpark construction is the first phase of the project.
“The overall project has been split into several segments, each with its own funding allocation.
“Funding for the carparks, interpretation of culture and history, signage and access is funded by a grant from the Commonwealth Government under its Black Summer Recovery Grants Program.
“This is the phase of the overall project which is starting now.”
There are two carparks designed to provide easy access to the restored bridge – one at the Orbost end, and the other at the Newmerella end.
