Local firefighters have been honing their skills this winter participating in a group exercise to stay in tune with their skills and protect East Gippsland.

Senior leaders of the Mitchell group put their crews through their paces at the Bairnsdale saleyards complex, with more than 50 firefighters from six brigades in attendance, plus members from the Paynesville Rehab unit and District 11 Head Quarters Brigade.

D11 Head Quarters manned the staging area simulating brigades entering and exiting the sire site, along with running all the mock communications and radio traffic.

Drills for the day included a pumping exercise, BA Hazmat exercise and burn over drills. Lakes Entrance Rescue Unit was also in attendance and took members through the use of their equipment in an MVA (Motor Vehicle Accident) scenario.

Lunch was provided by the Rapid Relief Team who have been a fabulous supporter of CFA.

“We would like to send a huge thank you to Simon Cox and the team,” group officer Len Jeffs said.

“The food was amazing and the coffee cart was most appreciated.”

This sort of ongoing training keeps members alert and up-to-date with processes and procedures that are needed to keep the community safe when disaster happens.
