Orbost Snowy Rovers are through to the grand final of the East Gippsland Football Netball League thirds competition after scoring an emphatic win over arch rival Lakes Entrance at the Lindenow Recreation Reserve last Saturday.
After occupying second spot for the majority of the season, the Blues have been on song in both finals, making light work of both Boisdale Briagolong and Lakes Entrance.
Orbost Snowy Rovers’ opponent will be minor premier, Lindenow, with a close and exciting clash expected at the Bairnsdale Oval this Saturday.
In less than ideal conditions, the Seagulls didn’t kick their first goal of the game until late in the final term with the heat well and truly out of the match by then.
The Blues made good use of the wind in the first term as ruckman, Brayden Fenner, continued his great form, well supported by the likes of Toby Herbert, Fletcher Kleinitz and Hugh Barnes, the Blues leading by 13 points.
Under the instruction of coach, Andy Malcolm, the Blues continually frustrated the Seagulls in the second term, bottling the ball up on the dead side of the ground, the Blues weren’t able to score, but restricted Lakes Entrance to just four behinds, the lead cut back to nine points at half time.
The third quarter was always going to be crucial, with Lakes Entrance needing to restrict the damage with the breeze to be any chance of running over Orbost in the final term with the breeze at their backs.
But it wasn’t to be, the Blues came out after half time meaning business, kicking three unanswered goals as its runners, led by Bobby Bills and Jacob Farley, began to dominate.
The last quarter was party time for the Blues as Kruze Farley (four goals), entertained the crowd with his extraordinary goalkicking talent, while Lakes helped itself to a couple of late majors.
Among the best players for Orbost were Herbert, Kleinitz, Kruze Farley, Barnes, Myles Mckerlie and Finn Donnellan
The recent league vote count and presentation night saw two awards go the way of the Orbost Snowy Rovers players.
Brayden Fenner was the winner of the thirds best and fairest, while Angus Joiner was successful in the goal kicking.
