Ten candidates with caring focus

by
12 September 2024
in Local News

Local Government elections are being run right across Victoria (excluding Moira Shire Council) in October 2024.

As with previous elections, all voting will be by postal vote and must be returned and received by October 25.

Caring East Gippsland is a group of interested local people who began meeting regularly to ensure a good field of strong candidates would be standing for council in East Gippsland, by offering practical support and some finance.

They are not a registered political party.

Caring East Gippsland is supporting the campaigns of Tom Crook, Judy Ireland, Cheryl Jakobi, Steven Columbus, Matt Stephenson, Sasha Kruse, Suzanne Davies, Jes John and Aly Nichol.

Any candidate who has accepted support from Caring East Gippsland aligns with the following values and views:

– The community is at the centre of decision-making, and people are supported to be healthy and happy.

– The economy is strong and supportive of everyone.

– Closing the gap for the First Nations people is a priority.

– The country is cared for and restored where needed.

– The wildlife and forests, lakes, rivers and mountains are valued for their beauty and natural values.

– Diversity within the community is respected and valued.

– Young people are provided with opportunities for growth, training and jobs.

– Arts, culture and heritage are valued as an integral part of our diverse communities.

– Smart, healthy enterprises are supported to be established and grow.

– Relationships between the community and the East Gippsland Shire Council are positive, trusting and open.

– The risks and opportunities of climate change are understood and planned for.

– And there are no candidates who are current members of any political party.

“It is extremely pleasing to see the level of interest in our local government elections for 2024. Each of the 10 candidates which Caring East Gippsland is supporting will run their own campaign with their own priorities. In essence, they are independent candidates who want to see inclusive, healthy and thriving communities,” Jane Greacen OAM, who is a current councillor and member of the organising group said.

“It is particularly pleasing to see a number of passionate, committed women putting their hand up for this important role.

“We acknowledge the courage and dedication required to stand for election and wish all candidates well in their campaigns.”

Caring East Gippsland is organising a launch event on Saturday morning, September 21, at the Hub in Bairnsdale, from 9.45 – 11.30am.

Well-known identity, Darren McCubbin will emcee the event and members of the community are welcome. Each candidate will speak briefly, there will be an opportunity for candidates to hear from community members present about what’s important to them and afterwards to meet and chat informally with candidates.

One of the candidates and a number of community members will be linking in to the launch remotely from Mallacoota. A recording of each of the candidate’s statements will be available for people who cannot otherwise attend.
