Director Crystal Stubbs and Margaret Beazer, sponsor of the Michael Beazer Works on Paper Prize 2024.

The inaugural Michael Beazer Works on Paper Prize 2024, featuring 39 finalists, opened last Friday to a busy crowd at East Gippsland Art Gallery, with some attendees travelling from afar to witness the opening event.

This $3000 acquisitive prize is a new biennial exhibition and drew an impressive 133 entries from across the country in its first year.

Crystal Stubbs, director of the East Gippsland Art Gallery, expressed her gratitude.

“Michael Beazer has long been a cherished friend and supporter of the gallery,” Ms Stubbs said.

“As a highly respected art collector and former gallery owner, Michael approached me several years ago with the idea of raising the profile of the East Gippsland Art Gallery while also contributing to a newly established permanent collection.

“His generous proposal was to sponsor an acquisitive works on paper prize. I am deeply thankful to both Michael and Margaret Beazer for giving us this wonderful opportunity to host the prize.”

The winning work was Terre, Pinus by Jenny Peterson, intaglio print, nature printing and watercolour.

The honourable mention went to Maggie Stein, for a linocut print titled Kissing the Earth.

Also opened was Couch Mother by Klara Jones, a warm and inviting installation.

Klara’s plush creation beckons visitors to sit, relax, and snuggle in, offering a space for comfort and reflection.

Guests are encouraged to share personal messages about their mothers, family members, caregivers, or anyone special to them by adding a note to the exhibition’s message wall.

Both exhibitions are on until October 19, 2024.

Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday 10am-4pm and Saturday 10am-2pm.
