The last of the Pipe Organ and Musical Events Group (POMEG) concerts for 2024 will enchant you with a program of light classics which will include popular themes from a wide spectrum of music from old to modern masters.

The entire second half is devoted to George Gershwin favourites.

Canzona Brass Trio, comprising John Schmidli (trumpet), Kees Dogger (French horn) and John Mourant (euphonium) have proved to be a popular local group with East Gippsland audiences.

John Schmidli’s trumpet playing is hugely popular with local audiences.

He has an impressive, virtuosic background including working with the Melbourne Symphony, Australian Philharmonic and Pops Orchestras, touring internationally and teaching at Melbourne University and the Victorian College of the Arts.

Kees Dogger has taught instrumental music around Victoria, having been based at Bairnsdale Secondary College for many years.

He is a fine composer, with a degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Music Composition (University of New England).

John Mourant has a wide background of brass band music, both internationally and at home and draws on a vast array of musical experiences which he brings to Canzona Brass as a fine player of the euphonium.

Soprano, Alison Jones grew up in Gippsland.

She studied at the Victorian College of the Arts and participated in the Victorian State Opera Young Artist Program.

She went on to sing major solo roles with the main Australian opera companies.

Then, based in the United Kingdom and France, she went on to perform with opera companies all over the world.

She was a Principal Artist with D’Oyly Carte Opera and appeared in concert and oratorio performances in London and throughout Europe.

After returning to Australia, Alison has continued to sing major operatic roles in Melbourne and has toured nationally with Promac Productions Australia.

As founder/director of La Prima Opera Company, she is taking high quality opera into regional and rural theatres.

Pianist, William Schmidt, in addition to accompanying Alison Jones, will also play solo Gershwin piano, including part of the ever popular Rhapsody in Blue.

William impressed the audience at a stunning solo concert in 2022 and his co-stars delighted to have him return.

Based in Melbourne he has a fine reputation as a solo performer, accompanist, composer and musical director.

He has two Masters degrees in piano performance, from the University of Melbourne and The Music and Arts University of Vienna, Austria.

He has received a number of prestigious awards and scholarships and is a sought-after accompanist for examinations and recitals.

The concert, presented by POMEG, is at Bairnsdale Uniting Church, corner of Great Alpine Highway and Lane’s Road, on Sunday, October 13 at 2pm.

Tea and coffee will be served during interval. Pay at the door. School students are free.

William Schmidt (piano) and Alison Jones (Soprano). (PS)
