Enhancing biodiversity

Members from three local Landcare groups – Marlo, Snowy West, and Jarrhamond – joined forces last Tuesday to spearhead an important environmental initiative aimed at enhancing biodiversity and improving water quality at Sailors Grave Brewing’s Dunetown.

The project centres around the construction of a wetland environment around the dam, which will not only provide critical habitat for birds, frogs and local indigenous plants but also help improve water quality within the catchment and absorb excess water in overflow areas.

The project promises to strengthen the area’s ecological resilience while creating a thriving sanctuary for wildlife.

To bring this vision to life, the Landcare groups partnered with owners, Chris and Gab Moore and the Moogji crew to plant a range of native species, all carefully selected and sourced from the Moogji Nursery which were chosen for their ability to support wetland ecosystems and increase biodiversity in the area.

Beyond the initial planting, the project is set for long-term success, with ongoing monitoring and management.

Photo points and trial cameras will be established on-site to track wildlife movements and observe changes in water flow and biodiversity over time.

In addition, regular planting sessions will continue to boost the health of the wetland as needed.

In an exciting initiative to further engage the local community, the groups will run iNaturalist activities at the site which will allow community members to document and contribute to a growing database of plants and animals in the area.
