Open morning

9 October 2024
in Local News

An open morning is being held on Saturday, October 12 from 10–11am at the Orbost rainforest centre reserve to welcome the community to find out a little more about this special little local reserve.

The rainforest centre is a green leafy reserve almost in the middle of town, on the corner of Lochiel and Browning Streets.

Tucked among the trees is an architecturally designed building with soaring ceilings and large window to let the forest ambience in.

The building has been home to Orbost Neighbourhood House for many years.

Initially built in the 90s as a Parks Victoria Visitor Centre it has seen a number of occupants come and go over the years.

The planted rainforest surrounding the building has also grown and changed over the years, evolving from a tended and watered arboretum that included some rare botanical specimens to a more natural self-managed mini forest, with a little bit of careful management.

Many locals enjoy wandering the paths under the cool shady trees, with trails through the reserve connecting Forest Park and the Slab Hut with Lochiel Park.

The reserve is managed by a local volunteer committee of management.

Any community members interested in joining the committee will have a chance to do so next month when nominations will be taken for the next three-year term of the committee.

Everyone is welcome to come and drop in on Saturday and discover this little green haven for themselves.
