Tomorrow’s Gippsland Agricultural Group (GAgG) Spring Field Day is aimed at increasing productivity on farms across the district, whether it’s livestock, soil or pastures and crops, and has attracted almost 100 ticket holders.
Ten sessions over four time slots means you can pick and choose your topics over the day, with the performance of different grain varieties at the Gippsland Research Farm being one topic, and presenters will also cover the use of fungicide to manage diseases in cereal crops.
Other topics include agro-forestry on farm; artificial insemination in your beef herd; a fertiliser budgeting masterclass; Ovastim and lamb survival percentages, and growing pastures in a variable climate – perennials versus annuals.
The ‘Can you grow more topsoil?’ demonstration always causes discussion with its aim to make existing paddocks better, while another topic is based around growing Lucerne in wet conditions is called ‘Fail fast, re-sow quickly’.
African lovegrass and the best and worst ways of controlling it is another session, thanks to the Toms Creek Landcare group, and another session on nitrogen fixation will include faba beans, vetch and clovers.
The Spring Field Day will take place at the Gippsland Agricultural Centre and Gippsland Research Farm next to the Bairnsdale Airport, Thursday, October 24, at 8.30am.
