Orbost Bowling Club was successful last week in Gippsland Bowls Region division two midweek pennant, moving up to third on the ladder in the process.
Playing at home in hot conditions, the Green Machine defeated Lakes Entrance 3 convincingly 69-49.
Beryl Dyce, Karen Chenney, Maurice Frank and Ron Hatcher leading the way winning 28-12, well supported by Janice Lynn, Kerry Edwards, Margaret Coulton and Geoff Lynn who saluted 25-14.
Unfortunately, Orbost’s weekend pennant division one side had another unsuccessful away game against Heyfield losing 52-76.
The side will be hoping to bounce back in this week’s home game against Howitt Park in round six action.
MELBOURNE CUP DAY
The Melbourne Cup Day event was very well supported by members and included a return visit from our travelling visitors Jeff and Lauren Gardiner.
The day was composed of two games played in perfect weather with a sausage sizzle lunch in between, with the bowlers retiring to the clubroom at 2.30pm to settle in and watch the cup and to see who had won the sweepstake, kindly organised by Des Edwards.
While there was no prize for best dressed, there was general consensus that the title should go to Ron and Gwen Hatcher
CLUB SINGLES CHAMPIONSHIPS
The next club championships will be the men’s and ladies’ singles with the knockout matches starting on Thursday, November 21.
Entries for the singles championships are now open.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Social bowls were a smaller affair last Thursday with members recovering from playing pennant in the hot conditions the previous day plus the extra Melbourne Cup Day matches on Tuesday.
With only a small number of bowlers present it was decided to have a friendly rollup.
Sunday saw a better turnout even with regulars away competing in the state fours at the Bairnsdale Golf Club.
The winning pair was Steve Holgate (skip) and Des Edwards.
The next social bowls will be on Thursday, with players to be at the club no later than 12.20pm so that the teams can be organised.
BAREFOOT
Twilight bowls is up and running and will continue to be held every Friday evening except for a short break over Christmas and the New Year.
The club opens at 5.30pm and people can come along at any time after that and stay for as long as they wish.
The club’s barbecue facilities will be ready for use, so why not bring along your own meal and make an evening of it.
The licensed bar and eftpos will also be available.
Bowls will be provided and if required some training in the basics of bowling can be arranged.
To protect the green, players are asked to wear flat soled shoes, socks or bare feet.
