As the boating season approaches, the Marlo Coast Guard is reminding boaters to prioritise safety by thoroughly inspecting vessels, equipment and trailers before heading out.
Key vessel checks:
– Service the outboard motor and replace old fuel.
– Inspect the steering system, anchoring equipment, bilge pumps, navigation tools, VHF radio, lights, and load-test batteries.
Safety equipment essentials:
– Ensure flares are in-date (outdated flares must not be onboard).
– Check the torch, bucket, EPIRB, fire extinguisher, and life jackets (inflatable jackets must be serviced as specified).
Trailer maintenance:
– Check wheel bearings, tyres, rollers, winch, cable, lights, and brakes.
– For guidance on minimum legal safety requirements, consult the Victorian
Recreational Boating Safety Handbook at safetransport.vic.gov.au.
Tips for offshore boating:
– Understand weather forecasts, especially wind direction, strength, and sea swells.
– Maintain contact with someone onshore.
– If uncertain about conditions, stay ashore.
– In emergencies, contact the Coast Guard via Triple Zero (000).
