The WORLD Sporting Precinct celebrated its official opening of stages one, two and three last Thursday, cutting the ribbon on the new netball courts and hockey fields (inset). The WORLD Sporting Precinct celebrated its official opening of stages one, two and three last Thursday, cutting the ribbon on the new netball courts and hockey fields (inset). Along with upgrades to the netball and hockey playing areas, there's new change rooms for umpires and players as well as a first aid room and function room.

Stages one, two and three of the WORLD Sporting Precinct was officially opened last Thursday, much to the delight of local sporting groups.

The WORLD Sporting Precinct project included netball and hockey upgrades and a pavilion featuring change rooms for umpires and players, first aid room, officials room and a function room with a commercial kitchen.

East Gippsland Shire Council mayor, Cr John White, commended the hard work that went into the project.

“This facility represents a new chapter for East Gippsland, honouring decades of community dedication and hard work, while creating a modern, accessible space for sport and recreation,” Cr White said.

“So many people have worked hard to push for this redevelopment and what we have today is a credit to all involved.”

“This precinct is more than a venue for sport – it’s a hub for connection, growth and opportunity. It brings people together, supports local clubs, and strengthens our community by attracting regional events and visitors.

“The WORLD Sporting Precinct reflects our commitment to enhancing community facilities, improving quality of life, and providing opportunities for everyone to connect, play, and grow.

“I encourage the community to explore and make the most of this fantastic space.”

The mayor said the official opening was a great celebration, and covered multiple generations, from the youngsters representing local hockey teams, to the young netballers trying out for the 2025 representative teams and the sharing of hockey and netball stories and history from those in attendance.

“Since the BNA returned to its home at the WORLD courts in late 2023, we’ve had over 500 netballers take to the new courts,” Bairnsdale Netball Association president, Carolyn Cameron said.

“The BNA has seen its competition numbers increase each season, and look forward to next year.”

East Gippsland Hockey Association life member, Sandra Wood, expressed her gratitude towards those who got the project off the ground.

“Thank you to those who finally made this happen, but probably an even more sincere thank you to those who over many years have worked towards and hoped for these courts, fields and facilities and bringing them all to fruition,” she said.

Final approvals for the stage four soccer precinct are expected in mid-2025.

The project received funding from the Australian and Victorian governments.
