The Symes are not good
Dear Editor,- I generally don’t respond to letters to the editor, but some untruths from now former Minister for Emergency Services, Jaclyn Symes, in last week’s edition require correction.
Firstly, she claims the cuts to the CFA Budget are wrong. Her own Government’s Budget papers clearly show a cut and the Victorian Volunteer Fire Brigades Association acknowledges a significant cut.
Secondly, she claims the Nationals in Government did not fund a single truck. This is also wrong. Not only did I personally hand over the keys to a number of new vehicles, but also opened new stations we funded.
Nor did she mention:
– Pre the 2022 election we also committed funds to build new CFA stations at Metung and Lakes Entrance, while Labor did not, and has since done nothing.
– That under her watch the number of CFA operational volunteers has reduced by a massive 5680 since 2017/18 (figures from the CFA annual report).
– That local CFA groups in the east of the State have recently written to the Roads Minister over the poor road network getting so bad they are now impacting on their emergency response times (in their 30 year old trucks she has not replaced in 10 years of government).
– That her government has allowed bush fire access tracks to fall into disrepair and that a number of the contractors paid for their upkeep were not been allocated any work pre-this summer, for the first time in years.
– That the Environment Minister has not responded to letters raising concerns over certain fire access tracks that were written in November 2023.
– The targeted amount of fuel reduction burns have consistently not been achieved.
Not a good start for our new Treasurer.

Merry Christmas
Dear Editor,- As we near the end of the year, I want to extend my warmest wishes to everyone in our wonderful community for a joyful Christmas and a safe, happy start to 2025.
Christmas and the New Year are times for celebration, reflection, and connection.
Whether you’re enjoying the great outdoors, relaxing at home or gathering with loved ones, I hope this season brings you peace, laughter and treasured moments.
Let’s also remember those who may be facing challenges or spending the holidays away from family. A simple act of kindness – a friendly chat, an invitation to share a meal, or lending a helping hand – can brighten someone’s day.
Our community has always shown incredible care for one another, and I couldn’t be prouder to see this spirit in action.
If you’re ticking off your Christmas shopping list, consider supporting our local small businesses.
They’re the heart and soul of East Gippsland, and your support means so much to them.
And for those looking to give back, local charities are doing incredible work and would welcome your generosity.
This year has brought challenges, but it’s also been one of resilience, progress and
celebration. Together, we’ve achieved great things, from rebuilding after natural disasters to completing exciting projects that enrich our community.
To all those working over the holidays –
emergency services, healthcare teams, and
many others – thank you for your
dedication.
Let’s also make our visitors feel welcome this summer, sharing the hospitality that makes East Gippsland so special.
On behalf of the councillors and staff, I wish you and your families a safe, peaceful, and joy-filled Christmas and New Year.
Warm regards,
Yours etc.,
East Gippsland Shire mayor, Cr John White
