Older residents in the Orbost community who face memory and cognitive challenges will soon be able to remain close to their loved ones when a new $45 million public aged care facility opens its doors in 2026.
The state-of-the-art residence in Orbost will include safety features to support the care of individuals with conditions like dementia and other older people requiring residential aged care.
It will offer 38 beds and replace the existing Lochiel House and Waratah Lodge facilities.
“We are thrilled this new facility will provide a nurturing environment for our elderly community, allowing them to age in place, surrounded by their family and friends,” Orbost Regional Health board chair Deborah Miller said.
“Our aim is to ensure people who have spent their lives in this community continue to receive the care they deserve, right here at home.”
The new facility will feature purpose-built single rooms, each equipped with their own private bathroom to provide comfort and privacy for residents.
The design will create a home-like atmosphere, with abundant natural light filling the spaces and beautifully landscaped gardens offering a peaceful and welcoming environment.
A new entrance on Arnold Street will provide easy access for residents, families and friends.
The Victorian Health Building Authority is responsible for planning and delivering this important project with builder SJ Higgins appointed to complete construction by mid to late 2026.
It is expected to create more than 135 construction industry jobs and make a significant injection into the local economy.
As the town’s largest employer, Orbost Regional Health is looking forward to growing its workforce to support the new aged care facility when it opens.
The health service also offers home and community-based aged care such as property maintenance, domestic assistance and personal care to support older people to live well in their own homes for longer.
