Hall set for upgrade

Hall set for upgrade

The Cabbage Tree Creek Hall will be refurbished thanks to a $44,139 community facilities grant from Bushfire Recovery Victoria.
Joanne Eades-Fischer, of the hall’s management committee, says the grant will support an upgrade of the hall’s sewerage system and electrical wiring, as well as construction of a verandah over an accessible entryway to protect it from the elements.
“We can’t tell you how excited we are because we’ve lobbied for years to get the wiring upgraded,” Ms Eades-Fischer said.
“The hall was built in the 1950s, so we don’t have enough power and capacity to run functions.
“It’s our community hub, when we are not holding functions, we are all using it, so to be able to get all the jobs done to get the hall up and running is just amazing,” she said.
The 2019/20 bushfires reached Cabbage Tree Creek from the north, east and west, leaving a lasting impact on the community.
The hall in town is used for community meetings and events, music and dance practice and emergency accommodation when required. It includes a gym that is used by elderly residents and a library that is popular with all ages. “The Cabbage Tree Creek Hall is a great example of a local hall that does it all – it’s a gym, a library, a dance floor, a meeting place, and now, it can look forward to hosting larger, longer events,” Victorian Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Lisa Neville, said.
This is just one of the projects funded by the Victorian Government in bushfire-affected areas, including $18.5 million announced in the Budget to build new accommodation, improve tourism infrastructure, and support local jobs across Gippsland.”
Further funding is available under Bushfire Recovery Victoria’s Bushfire Recovery Grants for Community Facilities and Bushfire Recovery Grants for Local Government Authorities and Community Service Organisations.
The grants are jointly funded by the Australian and Victorian Governments as part of the $86 million Community Recovery Package.
