Stage two begins

The much-anticipated project to update the eastern side of Nicholson Street, Orbost’s streetscape will begin on Monday, September 10.

The $1.7 million East Gippsland Shire Council project follows on from the first stage of the project, which saw the western side of the street updated between Ruskin and Salisbury streets.

The project will be divided in four phases – beginning at Ruskin-Lawson, Lawson- Wolseley, Wolseley-Lind, Lind-Salisbury.

Mayor, Cr Joe Rettino, said the works would use the same materials and landscaping as can be seen in stage one.

“The streetscape upgrade will involve improvements to the footpaths, tree planting, retaining walls, furniture and general streetscape amenity, between the kerb line and the shop fronts,” Cr Rettino said.

“The streetscape will enhance the rural character of the town centre and promote a safer and pedestrian-friendly streetscape for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

“Stage two will, like stage one, be completed in sections with works finished in one area before starting on the next section. Work will start at the post office corner with the aim to have the streetscape completed to the pedestrian crossing by Christmas.”

Council will provide frequent project updates to traders. Community members who would also like to receive these updates should provide their email address to council.

The contractor will make arrangements during the works to minimise disruption to customer parking, pedestrian and business access.

Works will stop on Saturday, December 15, to minimize disruption over the busy holiday period and recommence on Sunday, February 3, 2019.

The project is fully funded by council as part of its Capital Works Program.
