Girl Guide great retires

Saturday morning saw the Orbost Scout Hall transformed into a walk down memory lane, with walls adorned with Brownie and Guides uniforms, scrapbooks filled with newspaper clippings and photos of members who have come and gone - but throughout this time, one stalwart and her dedication has never wavered, Ruth Christy.
Ruth has spent the past 48 years dedicating her time to Girl Guides in Orbost.
For some 95 years, Girl Guides has been operational in the area, and for just over half of that time, Ruth has remained devoted until Saturday, where she officially retired.
Helen, Ruth’s daughter became a Brownie in 1974 and at the time the leader was leaving, and the unit was going to close until Ruth stepped up and took over.
At the time there were two Brownie Units, one Guide unit and one Ranger unit which ran on Monday and Tuesday evenings, with Noreen Thompson, Rosemary Squires and Mavis Rayner among the volunteer leaders at the time.
