A day of remembrance and celebration

A day of remembrance and celebration

"ANZAC day is both a time of sadness and joy, a day of remembrance and celebration. We remember those who have served in their country and died for their country in a multitude of conflicts in which Australian servicemen and women have been apart of over the years. We celebrate the part of us that makes us truly Australian, the spirit of the ANZAC. That ANZAC legend was born 108 years ago today on the shores of Gallipoli peninsula."
Those were the words of Flying Officer, Callun Sullivan, who opened the ANZAC Day mid-morning service at the Orbost Cenotaph on Tuesday. A small crowd attended the 11am service where local organisations, school children and veteran's families marched, following a Jeep before a plethora of well-spoken guest speakers including Flying Officer Callun Sullivan, Federal MP Darren Chester and Orbost RSL Sub-branch chaplain, Bevil Lunson, who not only had guests in prayer but also parted with some words of wisdom to future generations, "that happiness has a price, for surely if happiness is the product of freedom then freedom is the reward of courage." Wreaths and floral tributes were laid and the Orbost Secondary College performed before concluding the service.

The Dawn Service proved to be more popular this year, with more than 400 people attending, while a smaller crowd gathered for the late morning service. More photos on pages 8, 9 and 21. K102 - 6443
