Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester recently met with Save the Snowy Rail Bridge Association volunteers to check progress on the first stage of the project to the historic bridge across the Snowy River floodplains.
Mr Chester said he was looking forward to the project welcoming visitors once the entryway and signage were completed.
“The community has done an incredible job to get the project this far, and we discussed tactics for securing the $2.7 million we need to finish the restoration,” Mr Chester said.
“I will be making the case in Canberra that the full social and economic benefits of this project will only be delivered when we complete the missing section in the middle.”
The community has secured more than $4 million in state and federal government funding to get the project to this stage, and detailed costings have been prepared for the final section to complete the work.
More recent progress on the project includes the re-installation of the big red bike after some TLC from Findley’s Engineering.
The bike is now sitting on top of the unrestored bridge with the hopes it will draw attention to the need for funding for stage two of bridge restoration works.
