A two-day Road Policing Operation was recently conducted at the Newmerella Rest Stop.
The operation brought together local highway patrol units from Orbost and Bairnsdale, Orbost uniform members, a member from the Dog Squad, RPDAS Alcohol and Drug testing Unit and a guest appearance from the RBT film crew.
The operation was further aided by two members from the National Heavy Vehicle Registrar that allowed for roadworthy inspections of trucks utilising the road network.
The operation dubbed “Carpark” was managed by the East Gippsland Neighbourhood Policing Unit and provided an opportunity for local Police members to work alongside other specialist units and external agencies.
Well over 1100 drivers were breath tested, ensuring the road safety message was well and truly delivered to motorists along with several vehicles searched under the Drugs, Poisons and Controlled Substances Act.
This saw offences including possessing a drug of dependence identified.
More than 30 penalty infringement notices were issued for a range of road safety related offences along with 13 defect notices to cars and heavy vehicles, while eight
drivers will also be receiving summons to appear at court for other offences
detected and one vehicle was impounded for 30 days.
