Classic coming to Coota

21 April 2025
in Sport
This year's Vic Bream Classic Series is gearing up to head to Mallacoota for two days on April 26 and 27.

This year's Vic Bream Classic Series is gearing up to head to Mallacoota for two days on April 26 and 27.

The 2025 Vic Bream Classic Series is heading to Mallacoota on April 26-27.

The popular series is celebrating 20 years and more than $7 million injected into the East Gippsland region since 2005, regularly holding events at Mallacoota , Metung and Marlo.

Tournament director, Bill Hartshorne loves bringing the event to Gippsland.

“For 20 years the Vic Bream Classic Series has been providing a fun, inclusive and family friendly catch and release bream fishing tournament series throughout some of East Gippsland’s most picturesque locations,” Mr Hartsthorne said.

He is expecting another huge year for the series.

“In 2025 the series is only going from strength to strength with more amazing sponsors than ever before and over $180,000 in cash and prizes up for the grabs. Many of the prizes are randomly drawn, so everyone has a chance to win some amazing prizes,” Mr Hartshorne said.

Marlo will host round four on August 16-17, before the grand final heads back to Metung, with a date yet to be confirmed.

Australia’s premier bream fishing location where the best 50 teams from across Australia will battle it out to be crowned the 2025 champion.

“The Vic Bream Classic Series brings anglers from all over Victoria and interstate to the East Gippsland region and many new anglers each year get a taste of just what these picturesque towns have to offer,” Mr Hartshorne said.

The long term effects are significant.

“This usually starts a long-term tradition of visiting the region each year following the series and holidaying with their families,” Mr Hartshorne said.

The series is supported by East Gippsland Shire Council and Destination Gippsland – Events Gippsland.

Mayor Cr John White said the Vic Bream Classic series is a highlight of the year, drawing anglers from near and far to the competitive tournament.

”We’re proud to support the event in its 20th year, showcasing the stunning beauty of Metung, Mallacoota, and Marlo, along with fantastic bream fishing experiences,” he said.

At each of the five qualifying rounds each team of two anglers will be competing to not only take out the title at each venue, but also will be fighting it out for more than $26,000 in cash and prizes, not to mention qualification towards the Vic Bream Classic Grand Final.

“The beauty of this style of catch and release tournament fishing is you get to fish with your best mate, dad, mum, brother or sister – it is up to you,” Mr Hartshorne said.

The teams format creates a fantastic social feel to the weekend while still maintaining a high level of competition among teams.

“Since its inception in 2005 the Vic Bream Classic Series has turned into a large family of passionate anglers who love to fish, socialise, and have fun across Victoria.

“These great bunch of guys and girls follow the series to each destination and forge lifelong friendships with other teams along the way,” Mr Hartshorne said.

The event weigh in is at 2pm on both Saturday and Sunday where you will see the quality East Gippsland bream on display in a new large display tank.
