On Friday, April 25 at 6am the Orbost RSL is inviting residents to commemorate ANZAC Day by the Orbost Cenotaph (corner of Nicholson and Salisbury Streets).
At 10.45am there is also a march of local organisations, followed by a commemoration at the Cenotaph. Marchers should assemble at 10.30am.
The guest speakers for the 11am service are East Gippsland Shire chief executive officer Fiona Weigall and RAAF Flight Lieutenant Isaac Otte.
At 5pm there will be an ANZAC Day commemoration at the Jarrahmond Avenue of Honour, on B Road.
The public is welcome to any of these events.
There will be a breakfast after the dawn service, held at the Orbost Club Hotel.
The day was formed to honour the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, who served in the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War.
Newly-elected president of the Orbost Sub-Branch of the RSL, Carl Turney, said “We also strive to remember and thank all of those Australians, New Zealanders, and allies who have ever served in our defence – from the Boer War up until this very day.”
He continued, “ANZAC Day also represents a time when countries could rely on allies to help in one’s very survival – even if the cost was a great loss of life, and there were no short-term tangible benefits to assisting.
“The RSL holds these ceremonies on behalf of the public, to pay tribute to those who have died, been injured, or simply served. It is a stark reminder that human carnage should always be the last resort.”
The Cann River RSL Sub-Branch will be holding its dawn service at 6am and wreath laying service at 11am.
