Easter Saturday saw the staging of the fifth Jarrah’s Journey golf day, four person Ambrose event held at the Orbost Golf Club.
The event raises money for A-T research, the little-known disease Ataxia Telangiectasia, that local youngster Jarrah Beveridge was diagnosed with as a toddler.
Each year the local community does its bit to find a cure for the rare and incurable
blood disease, which affects only 40 children in Australia.
A-T sufferers have the worst symptoms
of cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and cystic fibrosis, with most kids ending up in a wheelchair by the age of 10 and life
expectancy shortened.
A field of 70 players made up of local, visiting and part time golfers enjoyed great weather, playing on course in an excellent condition due to the tireless efforts of the club’s hard-working volunteers.
The all-day barbecue provided was enjoyed by everyone and kick started the visitors who had travelled for the event.
The mixed event was won by Lakes Entrance team, “Al’s Evergreens”, Fay and Brian Hammond, Allan Lawson and Dave Murrell.
The men’s event was won by local team “Swing & Swear”, which comprised Garth Patterson, Zac Webb, Lee Johnson and Michael Meehan.
The total raised on the day for the BrAshA-T Ataxia Research Fund was a fantastic $5430, which was reached due to sponsors, prize and cash donations, all who played on the day, assisted with the starting, helped out with the barbecue, sold raffle tickets, ran the bar facilities and gave assistance where needed.
The golf club thanked local identity Dick Johnson who once again did a showcase display for the auction and was as always both entertaining and energetic.
The event is getting bigger every year and the Orbost Golf Club look forward to 2026 to see the player numbers reach the 100 mark.
