At the April monthly meeting at Orbost Probus Club members had the privilege of Jim Barnett, an SES volunteer to be the guest speaker.
The SES was formally known as the ‘civil service’ during WWII until 1975, SES is now celebrating 50 years of the name change status.
There are 5000 members statewide for Victoria.
Volunteers can join from the age of 15 with three months’ probation to see if they like it.
Training is practical with some online programs.
Rewarding life-style skills are taught including ladder safety, map reading, rope tying, how to operate pumps, set up lighting to assist police and ambulance where there is difficult access.
The SES is a support agency for CFA and forestry, assisting with meals during fires and transport helping police with search and rescue, the list is endless.
Jim encouraged those who have spare time on their hands and are reasonably
fit, healthy, want to make
new friends and learn extra skills, the Orbost SES team would welcome and appreciate new members.
Members thanked Jim for making time to speak to them at probus.
