A new food initiative aimed at supporting low-income families, single parents and young people living independently is launching in Orbost, offering free beginner cooking classes to help build kitchen confidence and promote healthy, budget-friendly meals.
The program, hosted at the Orbost Community College Food Tech building, will run from 4pm to 6pm on June 4, June 18 and July 2.
Organisers are inviting eligible health care card holders to register for the free course and includes transport, on-site childcare, ingredients and a take-home cookbook.
Participants will also receive a ‘goodie bag’ filled with basic pantry staples to support continued cooking at home.
Each session will focus on a different food group and teach participants multiple recipes and preparation techniques, using affordable and pantry-friendly ingredients. The initiative also connects attendees with local support services for those needing further assistance.
Spaces are limited and registration is essential.
