It’s been another huge week of social bowls at the Orbost Bowls Club, highlighted by another active week of participation, as the pennant season begins to loom on the horizon.

Thursday afternoon’s social bowls was played in cold and breezy conditions, players agreeing that play would be one game of 16 ends unless the cold got to them first.

The outright winners for the afternoon were Des Edwards (skip), Beryl Dyce, Greg Rankin and Kerry Thomas, with the runners-up being Maurice Frank (skip), Bruce Kneebone, Vanessa Frank and Dennis McCann.

Sunday’s playing numbers were increased by two visitors, Jan and Lois who were both familiar with carpet bowls but discovered that lawn bowls is very different, yet despite the difference they both appeared to have an enjoyable afternoon.

Scroungers was the format for the afternoon, which produced some very good scores in almost perfect bowling weather.

The highest scorers for the fifth round of the monthly competition went to Greg Rankin with 62 points, followed by Bruce Kneebone with 60 and Dennis McCann with 57.

With only two rounds left to go, the leader board shows Greg Rankin in first place, with an overall score of 224 and Geoff Lynn in second place with 205, with Maurice Frank next on 196.

The social bowls circuit will continue on Thursday, with players to be at the club no later than 12.30pm.

DRILLS AND SKILLS

In the absence oF normal coach, Ron Hatcher, who was unavailable due to other commitments, Geoff Lynn took over as coaching last Saturday morning

Lynn set up three rinks and rotated players through them, emphasising a different aspect of bowling on each rink.

To round off the morning, Lynn organised a game of “football”, where, at an almost 90 degree angle, the bowlers had to deliver their bowl through the goal posts without landing their bowl in the ditch, which was not very far behind the goal.

Most players managed to gain points however, only a few goals were scored.

The next Drills and Skills will on Saturday commencing at 10am.
