The Wilderness Coast Artists (WCA)
have moved.
To celebrate the move from Marlo into their new studio space in the Snowy Wilderness Discovery Centre at the corner of Lochiel and Browning Streets in Orbost, the Wilderness Coast Artists are holding a free open studio day on Sunday, September 14.
From 10.30am, various artists talks and painting demonstrations will be held.
The community is invited to call in for a chat over a cuppa and snacks during the day.
The move to Orbost has enabled an increase in art activities available to all members: Painting days take place every Tuesday, drawing classes every second Monday and regular workshops with visiting tutors take place throughout the year.
Members have access to large individual studio spaces to carry out specific projects every day.
Previously, they were only able to
meet twice monthly and for four weekends each year.
One member has taken up an individual space to prepare for a large solo exhibition in 2027.
The Wilderness Coast Artists is a friendly, local art society offering membership to the local art community since 2001.
Painting days offer a chance for members to paint together and discuss their work.
The new fortnightly drawing classes offer students a chance to discuss, refresh and learn drawing techniques and theories. Workshops are held four times a year with well-known tutors from the art world travelling to Orbost to deliver an intensive learning experience.
Recently, artist Catherine Hamilton delivered a three-day workshop on glazing techniques in acrylic paint and the style of Turner in the new studio spaces.
Students received an intensive experience using their acrylic paints to create glazed layers of sky and water and to apply
these techniques to a studies of their
chosen subjects.
Participants created their own versions of the techniques during the workshop under Catherine’s guidance.
Participants expanded their technical and artistic information for use in their future painting techniques.
Wilderness Coast Artists regularly connects with other art organisations around Victoria. Several WCA members are also members of The Australian Guid of Realist Artists (AGRA), the Watercolour Society of Victoria, the Town and Country Painters and the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors (MSWPS).
WCA now has an opportunity to host members of groups and individual artists on their art travels.
AGRA is planning a paint away in the district using the WCA studio space as a base next year.
