Orbost Girl Guides member Shaniel Newlyn and leader Rosie Thexton represented Orbost at the week-long 2025 Bush to Beach Australia Jamboree, which brought together more than 1200 Guides from every Australian state and Territory and International Guides.
Held in the NSW north coast town of Murwillumbah, the Jamboree delivered a mix of bushcraft, beach activities, leadership workshops, cultural exchange and most of all fun.
“It’s my second Jamboree,” Shaniel said.
“We’ve been practicing setting up tents, cooking on campfires and learning
about safety.
“I’m looking forward to seeing friends that I’ve made at other Girl Guide events.”
Rosie added, “We’re proud to be going as Orbost girls. We want to show everyone how strong and adventurous country kids and adults are.”
They participated in the Jamboree and carried with them the spirit of Orbost — resilient, curious, and ready for adventure.
The Bush to Beach Jamboree is more than just fun in the sun — it’s a chance for young people to build confidence, learn new skills and make lifelong friends.
Activities ranged from surfing, climbing on the Storey Bridge, horse riding, visits to theme parks on the gold coast, environmental workshops and team challenges.
While Girl Guides may be a century-old organisation, its values are more relevant than ever.
“We advocate for women, the environment and personal growth. Girls can learn to be independent, build leadership skills and find a safe place to be themselves,” State Commissioner for NSW, Jo Tonon said.
Ms Thexton praised Shaniel’s enthusiasm and dedication.
“Shaniel has worked hard to prepare for this experience. She’s a great role model for other young girls in our community.”
