Orbost Garden Club has announced exciting new changes to the schedule for the flower section of the Orbost Agricultural Show in 2026.
The Orbost Garden Club has been carefully considering how to make the flower section of the show more up-to-date with modern trends and more appealing to exhibitors and
spectators alike.
They are now pleased to announce the schedule has been changed in a few areas.
Firstly, there will no longer be a sunflowers competition.
However, the scarecrow competition
will remain.
There are many new varieties of compact sunflowers which are easily grown from seed.
These will have a section under cut flowers, which will read: One sunflower stem – stem to be no more than 30 cm (12 inches) in height.
Compact sunflowers seeds can be purchased online or from your usual seed supplier.
An added benefit to growing these is that they look amazing in the garden.
Seeds need to be planted as soon as possible to have your entries up and blooming beautifully for the show.
The sections in cut flowers that have been changed are as follows.
Container of petunias – replaced with “one sunflower stem”
Container of phlox – replaced with “one container of alstromeria”
One carnation – replaced with “grevillea
one stem”
The wording in section 24 will now read – “One stem Australian native flowering plant – excluding grevilleas.
Petunias, phlox and carnations can still be entered under “any exhibit not listed”.
The dahlias – section “B” will remain the same as last year.
In both floral art and junior floral art the number of sections has been reduced.
The floral art will now have seven sections instead of nine and there will only be one section under each age category in junior floral art, except for open to all ages, which will have two sections.
The names of these sections will be advertised after Christmas.
Section “E” – pot plants, the hanging containers have been removed due to OH&S concerns and space to display them properly.
The show aims to promote the scarecrow competition in schools and throughout
the community and hopes to see a spectacular display of scarecrows all along the wall of the shed.
The show committee is endeavouring to have the show schedule out early so don’t forget to pick up a copy and read it thoroughly.
